Vintage dress pattern: check!

I have finally created my first official vintage dress straight from the pattern!  The sad part is, it was incredibly easy to follow and put together, that I don't know why I was so afraid.

I picked a deep purple color for this dress. I did pattern 3.

After having issues with my Peggy dress, I purchased a few patterns that were true to my size.  Simplicity 4650 seemed like a great starting point.  The fit looked nice, and I liked the square neckline.  I'm not quite ready to wear a collar like that but I may in a future version of this dress.

The pattern was already cut out so I just fit it to my fabric and made the proper transfer markings without messing with the integrity of the vintage pattern papers.  The instructions were a simple front and back sheet and were very easy to follow.

The fit came out great - I didn't have to make any adjustments.  I left the bottom of the dress pretty long... I may hem it a little higher but I don't have very many long skirts so I think it'd be nice to have some variety in the wardrobe.

  1. Looks absolutely lovely and that colour is fab! What fabric did you use? I'm with you on length; I always wear my vintage dresses to hit the mid-point of the calf.

I got that pattern a few months ago, and have the same misgivings as you about the big collar! I like it, but I'm not sure I can carry it off. Maybe as a summer dress... I love the back view of the dress though, and seeing yours makes me think that I'll push it right up my list of priorities and make it soon!

  2. You look gorgeous!! I've been thinking about doing an original vintage pattern but too scared . Started sewing very recently :)

  3. It's lovely Christine, very flattering. I'm want to start on a vintage dress pattern I have but I keep getting tempted by sewalongs! Jane x

  4. Yay - well done! I was nervous like you, and when I finally got round to making up a vintage pattern, it couldn't have been easier! This dress is so lovely on you, very versatile and I'm sure it'll get lots of wear :)

  5. That dress is really flattering on you! It looks amazing. I am sewing a vintage pattern right now too - a blouse. There are some problems with fit because the pattern size was so small, I am really winging it with the muslin.
