Rainy Days Here I Come...

I’m taking part in my first Sew Along: the Lady Grey jacket sew along.  I’m pretty new to the world of sewing my own clothing. I’ve dabbled in craft and accessories but until recently hadn’t attempted clothes.  As a Scottish Highland dancer, I’ve recently needed some new costumes which are custom and can be incredibly expensive.  Luckily I had help from family and friends, but it inspired me to work on this skill myself.  What better way to start than a ‘sew along’?
I ordered the pattern for the Colette Lady Grey coat, but I’ve also been wanting to make something out of oilcloth... in particular, a raincoat.  So I’m going to try the Amy Butler Rainy Days Hooded Raincoat. I picked up some nice oilcloth from Bobbin’s Nest in Santa Clara. I’m catching up with the group and cutting out the patterns and muslin tomorrow.  Because I’ll be working with oilcloth, I’m going to take this slow as the fabric isn’t very forgiving.  I’ll keep you posted as to the progress.  Here’s a picture of the oilcloth and the green lining.

  1. I have some oilcloth I can't wait to make something with. I'm not sure what yet, but I have two yards of pink with strawberries and blue with hibiscuses. Do you have a teflon foot or are you going to masking tape it? I couldn't find a teflon foot, so I know I'll be going the masking tape route.

Your coat is going to be so cute!

I'm going to put tape on the foot - the ladies at my local store highly recommended that method, especially because the oilcloth I picked out can be pretty sticky. Can't wait to see what you make with yours! I want to see the strawberry fabric... sounds cute!

Typical oilcloth you can find just about anywhere (I found it in Lakeport!) Good to know that the tape method works well. I was kind of concerned that it wouldn't.

Oh I love them! Especially the strawberries but I love how bright the hibiscus is. Do you have the bag pattern?

  5. The boxbag pattern I'm going to use is here: http://dragoknit.blogspot.com/2007/02/box-bag-tutorial.html
I have a couple of other tote bag patterns for oilcloth, including one with a round bottom. I think these patterns would be too much for anything other than simple stuff. I'm not usually a big fan of pink, but I like it with the red and especially the green. And I really liked the two blues together in the hibiscus print.

I was just perusing the Colette patterns flickr pool today, ogling dresses, and saw a super cute plaid version of the Lady Grey jacket. Those patterns are definite on my To Make list! They're all gorgeous!

Oh great pattern!! Thanks for sharing. I think I'll have enough left over raincoat fabric to do one.

I love the new Colette dress. I think I'll have to try that one out after my sew along. Oh, and btw - your aboyne looked great this weekend!

  7. I think Macaron will be at the top of my list. It's so cute.

I think those bags are like the perfect size for ghillies and some little things to run to class with. Extra socks and stuff. I have leftover fabric from both of my Aboynes that I might use for them.

And thanks! I wish my stupid vest actually fit. I really wish it hadn't taken me ten years to realize that the reason it doesn't fit is because there's NO BONING in it. None! Ugh.
