Wish List: Mad Men Peggy Dress

While playing catchup with Mad Men episodes on our Tivo, I was instantly enamored by Peggy Olson's dress in episode 11.  I want to add this to my 'to sew' list but I need to begin a hunt for a similar pattern.

I love the blue/red combo, especially with the red peeking out in the skirt.  The two little buttons on the front are a fun accent.

Anyone have any pattern recommendations?  And what do you think of this season of Mad Men?

  2. I also LOVE this dress and posted a similar question on Pattern Review right after I saw it. Although I didn't get any real help, I DID recently come across Burda 7446. Take a look. The sleeves are different and the pleats don't come up as high, but it might be a good start!

I also have an old Threads issue that has a great article on pleats, so if you find a basic dress pattern that would work (6 gore skirt, etc) but just lacked the pleats, you could use the article to help. The issue is 117.

If you want more pictures, check out the Mad Style blog.

  3. I do think that's a super dress, and it would look wonderful as you walked about (or danced!). I hope you find a suitable pattern - keep us posted!

  4. I am doing a version of this dress (called "the peggy dress") for my kids clothing line. www.llum.com for fall 2011.

The front bodice and skirt are a single piece, same with the back bodice and skirt. The sides of the skirt are panels with the contrast box pleats sewn in, and and the button tabs are necessary to hide the construction of the skirt panels where they join the side waist. I love this dress!

  5. Do you take commissions, or know anyone who does? My wife saw the Peggy Olson dress watching Mad Men and she went nuts. It would be amazing if I could find a way to present the dress to her for her birthday. I've scoured the internets and can't find it for sale anywhere. Can you help me?

    1. Unfortunately I don't do sewing for other people (not b/c I don't want too, I just don't have the experience). However, I would recommend you try sites like Etsy. Also, broaden your search a bit and try 'Mad Men' or 50s/60s dresses and you might have more luck. Narrowing it down to Peggy Olsen's pleated dress is going to limit your results and you'll find that people who can already create dresses from that era or in the Mad Men style may be able to help you. Good luck!
