Me Made May: Days 25-31 and Reflections

It's JUNE!!!!  WOOOHOOO!

Ok, Me Made May wasn't really that bad. But, as they say, when it rains it pours, and a lot of stuff happened this month.  Not all bad, but it was definitely a roller coaster in the middle of the month.

Day 25
What I Wore: My gingham violet blouse with jeans
What I Did: Worked from home. Wallace wanted to join me for the picture.

Day 26
Eek!! I didn't even realize I had missed a day until I was compiling this post.  I didn't even do anything exciting that day, just a lot of working out (see recap at the end of the post). Oops!

Day 27
What I Wore: My new Cambie dress. I wore it for the first time.
What I Did: Took pictures in it then went out with the hubby. Nothing super exciting but it was a fun dress to wear.

Day 28
What I Wore: My irish dance dress! I didn't make the whole dress but I did do a minor refashion to it with my mom's help.
What I Did: I was at a competition allllll day! Like my new wig? ;)

Day 29
What I Wore: The California Winter Tunic
What I Did: Nada. Worked during the day. Had a ridiculously early meeting in the morning (seriously, the sun was no where to be seen and it's been getting light here around 6ish). When I got home, I changed into something more comfortable.

Day 30
What I Wore: Pajama Party pants... I know. Again.
What I Did: I did some tedious tasks in the sewing room in the evening. Pre-washing fabrics and having to iron them is a necessary evil and I don't do it nearly enough.

Day 31
What I Wore: The Cambie dress again!
What I Did: I wore it to work. I ended up going to a work event that mainly consisted of women and got so many compliments on the dress. One person told me it was very 'Adele.' Hm, I'll take it.

Reflections on Me Made May 2012

Aside from missing the one day, I would still call it a success.  It was a month of many challenges and there were several points where I almost quit, just from outside stresses.  In the end I convinced myself to stick with it. I do love a good challenge.

1.  Doing Me Made anything is tough when you take on a workout challenge.  Again, due to my competitive nature, I did go more into this workout challenge than I probably needed to... but I really want to win.  I mentioned before that my local fitness class studio, the Dailey Method, has a challenge each month.  The client who attends the most in any one month period wins a free class for themselves and 22 friends.  I probably didn't need to take this on in May but I knew that my June and July availability would be iffy due to vacation schedules, work craziness, etc.  And the person who won last month only had to go 21 times... that's only like 5 times a week.  I could totally do that.

Ok, well, by the end of the day today, I hope to have gone 30 times in May.  This doesn't necessarily mean I went every day - I took some days off.  But I did several double up days to make up for that.  So when you're constantly wearing workout clothes, none of which you made, it can be a challenge.  But now that I have a serger... who knows?  Maybe the next Me Made challenge will be easier?  Anyways, I don't know if I won or not.  Wish me luck! It was supposed to end yesterday but we had a bomb threat (crazy, right??) down the street from the studio a couple of weekends ago so they added one more day to the challenge to make up for it.

2.  Another challenge (as you see, when I go all out, I go ALL OUT), is that I got a little more involved in standup paddle boarding this month.  I first tried it in Hawaii but as we're so close to the ocean I wanted to see if I could keep it up over here.  Well, wearing a swimsuit, or even a wet suit due to freezing ocean weather in Northern California, is not conducive to a sewing challenge.  But it was only for a couple of weekends and only for a few hours each day.

Ok, the day wasn't as cold as it looks, but the water sure was...
My rental board, paddle, and me looking like a seal.

3. On to the actual clothes I wore.  While my separates are still growing, I tended to favor a few pieces - mainly newer pieces that I made.  I think I need to weed through my closet to figure out the wearability of some of the older pieces.  Mainly because I wasn't finishing seams back when I first started sewing, and I need to clean them up a bit.  Having this serger is going to be such a godsend for the quality of my clothes! I can already see it from the couple of pieces that I've made.  It actually makes me cringe to see some of my old finishing (or lack thereof).

Some of my dresses don't get enough wear, but mainly because they're more formal or for a night on the town (which I rarely do).  I'm hoping they'll get some love during the summer when I'm going places and doing things.  But it makes me realize I need more work-friendly dresses and casual options.

One last thing that I accomplished during the month of May, that doesn't affect my Me Made May status.  I finally opened my Etsy shop!  Right now it just has a few vintage patterns listed, but I'm hoping to add some other handmade items during the summer.  I'll also be adding a lot more great patterns that I've picked up in my travels, but I just need to spend some time going through and checking the quality and completeness of each before I'm ready to list them.  I'm hoping to get a few more listed this weekend.

Oh, and a lot of readers have been asking about my thoughts on my serger.  I'll write a separate post about that soon! I've been using it a lot but still haven't run out of all of the pre-supplied thread.  I figure that once that has run out, I can say that I've given it enough use to write a review of it.  I'm halfway there so stay tuned!

Me Made May: Days 19-24

It's been a week.

Sewing has been keeping my spirits up and I have another creation to share later this week, but there's just still been a lot going on.  It's alright, I'm dealing with it, and just trying to make time to be crafty.

I did have some exciting moments though! I got my new/first serger in the mail!  The picture is from it being literally unpacked from the box, sitting on the floor, while I tried to figure out where I was going to put it.  I was totally intimidated by it, but after watching some YouTube videos, I was not only able to use it with the default threads, but also rethread it with my own.  I'm still so impressed with how fast it is! And efficient! I actually can't wait to make more garments because of it, and to go back and look at some of my other (messier) pieces and see if I can clean them up.

Anyways, here's what I wore this week:

Day 19
What I Wore: My new Ceylon
What I Did: We were godparents to my nephew so we went to the ceremony then to lunch with the family

Day 20
What I Wore: Plaid circle skirt with a store-bought sweater
What I Did: Work! Was in training all day so I just needed to be comfy

Day 21
What I Did: More work

Day 22
What I Wore: My Main Squeezebox Outfit
What I Did: Last day of training. Woohoo!

Day 23
What I Wore: Tree of Life dress
What I Did: Yeah, it was a really stressful day. I literally bolted out the door so took just a second to snap my photo. Was not ready for a smiley-face at the time.

Day 24
What I Wore: My first Rooibos
What I Did: Worked from home.  I think I actually wore sweats during the day then changed into this in the afternoon.

Me Made May: Days 13-18

Ugh, this past week was brutal.  Physically and emotionally draining.  Work was super busy - I've got a lot going on right now.  Also, I'm trying to win a workout contest at my local fitness studio (the Dailey Method) so I've been going pretty much every day, or doubling up classes when I know I'll have to miss a day later in the week.  The good news is, I'm in the lead!  Then family stuff. Well, don't get me started.  The hubby and I were already dealing with emotional stuff and now this... Everything happens in 3's right? I'm not even sure what number we're on.  Anyways, enough moping.  I managed to get every MMM day in, though one was a repeat, and a pretty weak one at that.  I did get some sewing done which helped me to destress a little bit. But you'll get to see that outfit later this week, and as part of next week's MMM review!

Day 13
What I Did: Went to a friends house to watch Sense and Sensibility and have a knitting party.  I brought my crochet blanket so that I could make some progress on it.

Day 14
What I Wore: Pajama Party Pants
What I Did: Worked from home.  Needed comfy pants to get through the long day.

Day 15
What I Did: Workety, work, work, work!

Day 16
What I Wore: Deja vu? Pajama Party Pants
What I Did: I worked from home in workout clothes but ended up just wearing my pj pants again in the evening.  I didn't wear the same top - the picture is just a repeat from the other day.

Day 17
What I Wore: Plaid Summer Dress. Yup, I wear this a lot.
What I Did: Went into the office but didn't manage to get a picture until I was home at the end of the day.

Day 18
What I Wore: Summer Sails Dress
What I Did: The hubby and I went out to a casual dinner in our local downtown area.  The weather was beautiful and we just wanted to relax after a draining week.

Me Made May: Day 7-12

On to the next 6 days of Me Made May!

It's not exactly hard, but I do lack creativity in my wardrobe which becomes extremely evident during these self-made months.  Well, we're almost halfway there!

Day 7
What I Wore: It was a beautiful day outside. Wore my Jumping in Puddles dress.
What I Did: Worked from home, dance class in the evening. Wore workout clothes to that.

Day 8
What I Wore: Colette Clovers and my You've Got Me Collared blouse.
What I Did: Worked.

Day 9
What I Wore: My Modern Garden Party dress. I wore a grey sweater with it during the day.
What I Did: Worked during the day then the sewing meet up in the evening!

Day 10
What I Wore: Colette Ginger and my Peter Pan Polka Dots blouse
What I Did: Went into the office. Busy bee.

Day 11
What I Wore: My first Parfait dress.  Still a favorite.
What I Did: Wore it after a long day of work. Relaxed in the backyard with some BBQ and a glass of wine.

Day 12
What I Wore: My Flowers in Paradise Lonsdale dress.
What I Did: In the morning, the hubby and I participated in the local 5k then I went to workout at the Dailey Method.  Afterwards I pretty much spent my day wearing this dress while enjoying the sunshine.

Time to plan for another week!

Me Made May: Days 1-6

As promised, here's my recap of the first six days of Me Made May.

Overall I've met my goal of one item per day, though I cheated a little on day 4.  It seems that I'm having the same problem as other bloggers in that I have more items better suited for casual, summer days.  I thought since Self-Stitched September last year that I would have made enough fillers for my wardrobe, but I'm still lacking enough variety for work or for super casual days.  If I can achieve one of my goals for 2012 - working with knits - I think I can definitely fulfill the latter.  And I'm definitely more conscious about making more items that I can wear for work.  So, it's a work in progress.

Anyways, on to the recap!

Day 1
What I Wore: Peter Pan Polka Dots Blouse (Banksia)
What I Did: Went into the office

Day 2
What I Wore: Jasmine Blouse and my Remnant Skirt
What I Did: Again, the office.  Working hard for the money.

Day 3
What I Wore: Tree of Life Dress
What I Did: Work, work, work

Day 4
What I Wore: Chirality Scarf. See what I mean about cheating? But I did make it!
What I Did: Worked from home in the day, then went to the Snow Patrol concert in the evening. Woohoo!  It was a beautiful day but a little chilly, so the perfect weather for the scarf.

Day 5
What I Did: I convinced the majority of our adult Irish dance class to take a standup paddle board lesson.  We went to Santa Cruz and had a great time paddling around the harbor.  Afterwards we came back to our house for a little BBQ and some margaritas.  I got dressed up in this outfit that I made last summer.

Day 6
What I Wore: My Colette Sorbetto blouse with some jeans
What I Did:  I needed something really casual to wear as we went to visit some farm animals that my friends' daughter is raising.  In particular I wanted to play with her little black lamb.  She got him all situated in my lap for a nice belly scratch.  I think Wallace may need to get ready for a new sibling. I'm in love.

Now, on to week 2!

The 'Peter Pan Polka Dots' Blouse & MMM Kickoff

Oh, by the way... I've signed up for Me Made May.

Sometimes I put the little 'participating' button on the side of the blog and then forget to actually talk about it.  But I really enjoyed the last Self-Stitched September and pretty much signed myself up mentally immediately afterwards.  So here's my pledge this time around:

'I, Christine of What's Up, Cupcake? Blog, sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May '12. I endeavour to wear at least one handmade garment each day for the duration of May 2012.'

Essentially the same as last time, but my wardrobe has really grown over the last few months.  I hope to have less duplicates, though there are some items that I just love so they're in constant rotation.

I'll lump the posts together when possible so you're not reading a 'what I wore' post everyday, but I'll  make sure to call out new items... like this one!

MMM '12 Day 1: The 'Peter Pan Polka Dots' Blouse

The Facts
Fabric: not sure of the fabric... 2 yards of a vintage silky white with blue polka dots fabric that I picked up from the flea market $10
Pattern: Megan Nielsen's Banksia, second time making it $0
Year: Contemporary
Notions: Buttons $1.50, bias tape and elastic from stash
Time to complete: 3.5 hours
First worn: 1st of May as my first Me Made May item!
Wear again? All the time!
Total cost: $11.50

As I mentioned the first time I made Megan Nielsen's Banksia, this is the perfect blouse.  It's so fast to sew, so few pattern pieces, and only requires a minimal amount of fabric.  It's also the perfect mix between casual and work appropriate, so with this version I made sure to touch on the latter.  I never have enough blouses for work and as soon as I laid my hands on this fabric I knew it would be perfect.  It's a nice, silky fabric but it came together as smoothly as if I were working with cotton.  So, no idea what it is, but I love it.

I started on this blouse immediately after the last one but I had a slight delay in finishing it just because I didn't have the buttons on hand.  I finally made it out to the store this weekend to pick some up.  The only change I made to the blouse, and really just because I liked the look it had on my Darling Ranges dress (post coming soon) was to add elastic into the sleeves.  I liked the little gathered look it adds to the ends.

I've noticed the blogisphere aflutter with MMM announcements, so are you participating?
